Durak
The Russian attack and defense card game
Overview
Durak (Russian for "fool") is Russia's most popular card game. It's an attack-and-defense game where players take turns attacking and defending. The goal is simple: get rid of all your cards. The last player left holding cards is the durak (fool) and loses.
Deck: Standard 52-card deck (36 cards for 2-3 players: 6-Ace only)
Goal: Get rid of all your cards; avoid being the last player with cards
Setup
- Use full 52-card deck for 4+ players, or only 6-Ace (36 cards) for 2-3 players
- Deal 6 cards to each player
- Place remaining cards face-down as the draw pile (talon)
- Turn the bottom card of the talon face-up and slide it partially under the pile - this is the trump suit
- Player with the lowest trump card goes first as the attacker
Card Ranking
Within each suit, from high to low:
Trump cards beat all non-trump cards, regardless of rank.
How to Play
Game Structure
The game proceeds in rounds with one attacker and one defender. Other players may assist the attacker.
The Attack
- The attacker plays any card face-up
- The defender must beat this card or pick it up
- To beat a card:
- Play a higher card of the same suit, OR
- Play any trump card (if the attack card is not trump)
- Play a higher trump (if the attack card is trump)
- If the defender beats the card, the attacker may continue attacking
Attack: 7♠ → Can beat with: 8♠, 9♠, J♠... or any trump
Attack: K♥ → Can beat with: A♥ or any trump
Attack: 6♦ (trump) → Can beat with: 7♦, 8♦, 9♦... (higher trump only)
Continuing the Attack
After the defender beats the first card, the attacker may:
- Play another card that matches the rank of any card already played (attack or defense cards)
- The defender must beat each new attack card with a valid defense
- Continue until the defender picks up or beats all cards
- Maximum attacks = defender's hand size (can't give them more cards than they can hold)
Attack #1: 9♣
Defense: J♣
Attack #2: J♠ (matches the J♣ defense)
Defense: A♠
Attack #3: 9♥ (matches the 9♣ attack)
Defender must beat it or pick up all cards
Assisting the Attack
Other players (besides the current attacker and defender) may help attack:
- Can add cards that match ranks of cards in play
- Can only attack if defender has beaten the previous card
- Cannot exceed defender's hand size
- Assist clockwise from the primary attacker
Ending a Round
Successful Defense
If the defender beats all attack cards:
- All played cards go to a discard pile (out of game)
- The defender becomes the next attacker
- The player to their left becomes the new defender
- All players draw back to 6 cards (attacker draws first)
Failed Defense
If the defender cannot or chooses not to beat a card:
- The defender picks up all played cards (attacks and defenses)
- The defender's turn is skipped
- The player to the defender's left becomes the new attacker
- The next clockwise player becomes the new defender
- Other players draw back to 6 cards
- The player who picked up does NOT draw
Drawing Cards
After each round, players draw from the talon to replenish to 6 cards:
- Primary attacker draws first
- Other attackers draw (in clockwise order)
- Defender draws last (if they successfully defended)
- When talon is empty, play continues without drawing until someone wins
Winning and Losing
Players exit the game when they have no cards left:
- You must empty your hand at the end of a round (can't go out mid-attack)
- Once out, you're safe and stop playing
- The last player still holding cards is the durak (fool) and loses
- In some variations, the durak must deal the next game
Strategy Tips
As Attacker
- Lead low cards: Save high cards and trump for defense
- Attack with pairs: If you have matching ranks, use them together
- Force trump: Make defender waste trump cards
- Coordinate attacks: Work with other players to overwhelm defender
- Watch defender's hand size: Don't attack more than they can receive
As Defender
- Use minimal defense: Beat attacks with the lowest card possible
- Save trump: Try to defend without using trump
- Know when to fold: Sometimes picking up is better than wasting trump
- Count attacker's cards: If they're low on cards, they may not continue
General Strategy
- Track trump cards: Knowing which trump remain is crucial
- Remember played cards: Helps predict what others hold
- Target weak players: Attack players with few trump or high cards
- Protect strong players: Don't let skilled players go out first
- End game focus: When talon is empty, play more aggressively
Variants
Podkidnoy Durak (Throw-in Durak)
The standard version described above. Attackers can throw in cards matching ranks already in play.
Perevodnoy Durak (Transfer Durak)
The defender can transfer the attack to the next player if they have a card of the same rank as the attack card. The new defender must beat the attack instead.
Kozyrnoy Durak (Trump Durak)
In the first round, only trump cards can be used for attack. From the second round onward, normal rules apply.
Team Durak
With 4 or 6 players, play in teams. Partners sit across from each other. A team loses if both players are the last two with cards.
Common Mistakes
- Wasting trump cards on low-value attacks early in the game
- Over-defending with high cards when picking up would be better
- Not coordinating with other attackers
- Forgetting attacks must match ranks already in play
- Attacking beyond defender's hand size
- Not tracking which trump cards have been played
- Drawing in the wrong order (attacker should always draw first)
- Helping a strong player get rid of their last cards
Terminology
Example Round
Attacker plays: 8♣
Defender plays: J♣ (beats it)
Attacker plays: J♠ (matches the J♣)
Defender plays: K♠ (beats it)
Another player assists: 8♥ (matches the 8♣)
Defender plays: 6♦ (trump beats non-trump)
Attacker plays: K♥ (matches the K♠)
Defender: No cards to beat it - picks up all 8 cards
Result: Defense failed. All players except defender draw back to 6 cards. Next player attacks.
Tips for Beginners
- Start with 2-3 players using the 36-card deck to learn the basics
- Focus on understanding beat mechanics before learning transfer variants
- Watch experienced players to see strategy in action
- Don't be afraid to pick up cards early - it's often the right move
- Keep track of trump cards - write them down if needed while learning
